A journal often becomes difficult to maintain when every possible field feels mandatory. Save four essentials after the trade, then add context when it has a clear purpose.

Save four essentials first

A basic entry starts with the symbol, direction, outcome, and P/L. These fields are enough to place the trade in your record list, calendar, and period totals.

  • Symbol: use the same name each time, such as BTCUSDT or AAPL
  • Direction: long or short
  • Outcome: win, loss, or flat
  • P/L: use the actual amount or return confirmed in the trading account

Add strategy and notes only when they explain something

A strategy name is a filing label. Keep it short and consistent so similar trades stay together.

A useful note identifies the entry reason and the condition that would invalidate the plan instead of offering a long market summary.

Leave open trades open

Do not force an unfinished position into a win or loss. Save it as open, then add the exit date, exit price, and actual outcome when it closes.

Keeping the entry note separate from the closing note also makes it easier to compare the original plan with the action you took.

The first version does not need to be perfect

Saving the basics after each trade and completing the chart or notes at the end of the day is a valid workflow. Consistency matters more than completing every optional field.
